“Unfinished Paintings” at LACE.

Have you ever seen a painting in progress and wonder what it would take for the artist to consider it finished?  Or, have you ever looked at a painting in process and think about how it might look when completed?

Two curators, Kristin Calabrese and Joshua Aster, have organized an exhibition featuring 38 unfinished paintings by 38 artists.  The exhibition opens on Thursday, June 16 at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions and allows you, the viewer, to interact with these “unfinished” works and contemplate these issues and engage in the artist’s process.

Included in the exhibition is this unfinished painting by CB1 Gallery artist Lisa Adams.  Once completed, this painting will be included in Lisa’s exhibition at the gallery this coming December.

So, stop in at LACE between June 16 and August 28th and see it and the rest of the exhibition and then, come to CB1 in December to see it in Lisa’s solo show.

    The problem with most contemporary painting is that they Are finished. They simply illustrate a predetermined idea, working towards a hemmed in “concept’ rather than using one as a starting point and accumulating ideas, feelings, and experiences along the way.
    Layering is what gives art power, relationshipos what gives it life. We need to throw out all the academic ideas of the last few decades and get back to fundamentals. There ARE different forms of art and Purpose deterimes the form. These lack purpose beyond career, and Self expressionism.
    Creative art explores to find what is expressIVE of the human condition. It attempts to define who We are, explores nature, and reaches for what we call God, meaning and purpose. These have been lost. These are what formed Modernism from collecting art from around the world of all cultures and ages, finding what is fundamental.
    Never about Me, always about We. we are fractured now and people cry out for it, but have failed. True art crosses all lines of class, ethnicity, gender and spirituality. It does not cater to a few, but seeks the all. How well one accomplishes this is what makes a work powerful, alive and Finished as to Purpose.
